John Lewis Obituary Analysis

The obituary I read was for former activist and congressman John Lewis. The obituary, by AP News, somewhat followed The New York Times obituary outline. The obituary began stating Lewis had died and his age, however soon after, it did not state his cause of death. Information is then given on his notable achievements and that is followed by his life in chronological order, per The  New York Times guidelines. The article quoted former President Barack Obama in the interview along with Nancy Pelosi and former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Those who were quoted were good sources as they knew Lewis and had seen first-hand the changes he made in the world. There were also direct quotes by Lewis included in the article. These were very impactful as they showed multitudes about his character. I think overall the obituary did a wonderful job describing the character of Lewis, and noting his achievements.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Joaqin Guzmán “El Chapo”, pled guilty to helping her husband run his drug empire. Coronel Aispuro, 32, had no criminal record, and was not involved in violence which helped lower her term, according to NPR .  Her husband, Guzmán, is currently serving a life sentence in Colorado, according to BBC . He is 64.  Coronel Aispuro originally faced 10 year in prison. She expressed “true regret for any and all harm” through a Spanish translator in court, according to NPR.  Previously, Coronel Aispuro helped Guzmán escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. Coronel Aispuro also pled guilty to federal offenses during a plea deal with federal prosecutors, according to NPR.  In court on Tuesday, Judge Rudolph Contreras also ordered Coronel Aispuro to forfeit about $1.5 million, according to BBC. How I would prepare for covering the upcoming election

  By: Madison Maronde To prepare for covering the upcoming election. I would start by looking up the issues that will be voted on. I would see if the mayor was up for re-election, or other trending topics such as police reform were being voted on. I would also include in my article places and times people can vote. I think it would be beneficial as well to include a link of how people can register to vote if they haven’t yet. To prepare for interviews at the polls, I would write questions asking about demographics of voters as well as if they have voted in the past. I would also ask if they have been waiting to vote for a while and possibly why they are choosing to vote. I would bring a camera to capture what the polls looked like and would utilize social media to update people on wait times, or to tweet updates on results of the election.
