El Chapo’s wife was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday.

Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Joaqin Guzmán “El Chapo”, pled guilty to helping her husband run his drug empire. Coronel Aispuro, 32, had no criminal record, and was not involved in violence which helped lower her term, according to NPR


Her husband, Guzmán, is currently serving a life sentence in Colorado, according to BBC. He is 64. 


Coronel Aispuro originally faced 10 year in prison. She expressed “true regret for any and all harm” through a Spanish translator in court, according to NPR. 


Previously, Coronel Aispuro helped Guzmán escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. Coronel Aispuro also pled guilty to federal offenses during a plea deal with federal prosecutors, according to NPR. 


In court on Tuesday, Judge Rudolph Contreras also ordered Coronel Aispuro to forfeit about $1.5 million, according to BBC. She also will need to be supervised for four years after her release from prison, according to BBC.
